BAL Assessment Mitcham May 2026
When undertaking a BAL Assessment in Mitcham, Victoria Ecosystem Services unexpectedly discovered some magnificent Yellow Box trees within the bushland reserve nearby. The high conservation value bushland reserves of Mullum-Mullum Creek, Hillcrest and Yarran Dhearn, are home to some towering Yellow Box trees.
Eucalyptus Mellidora, Yellow Box is a medium to occasionally tall tree 15-30metres high. The crown is large and of medium to open density. It grows in association with other box trees such as Eucalyptus Polyanthemos, Red Box, Eucalyptus Albens White Box, Eucalyptus Macrocarpa Grey Box as well as Red Stringybark (Eucalyptus Macrorhyncha) and Brown Stringybark (Eucalyptus Baxteri). Eucalyptus Mellidorais related to Eucalyptus Sideroxylon (Ironbark) and its timber is strong and extremely durable with a density of about 1100kg m3 on par with E.sideroxylon. It has an interlocked grain and is very hard. Traditionally used for heavy engineering construction. It was very likely used in the construction of the blacksmith’s shed in Schwerklot Cottage complex that places it at circa 160 years old and still standing. Yellow Box is undoubtedly a magnificent tree and also regarded as one of the best honey producers of all the Eucalypts.
