BAL Assessment Portsea Mornington Peninsula
The two major bushfire hazards in the Portsea landscape are from Point Nepean National Park in the North-West, and Mornington Peninsula national Park in the South-West.
Both of these areas are heavily vegetated with flammable vegetation and are exposed to the hot North-Westerlies or the gusty South-Westerly changes that are prevalent on high fire danger days.
The vegetation here is predominately highly flammable. There are Tea Trees and Moonahs with a weedy under storey of Polygala on sandy soil. The sandy soil influences the vegetation to dry out and be readily available to burn, as seen in 2009.
